Why Thirsty Thursday is Better Than the Weekend

For a lot of students, Thursdays are the first night of a three day weekend. Every weekend deserves a great kickoff. And let’s be honest, we’re all ready to be done with the week by the time Thursday rolls around, and that first night out is something special, like a best friend that returned after being away for a week. As far as class goes, Friday is basically the most pointless day of the week. And if you are blessed with no classes on Fridays, Thirsty Thursday can be very, very tempting.

There are a number of reasons why Thursdays are superior to the weekend – drink specials, Thirsty Thursday parties, the tradition of it, and the best reason of all, which is that Thursday is separate from the weekend. I’ll explain…

It’s often implicitly stated that college students go out on the weekends. Even students that don’t drink find things to do in town that don’t involve sitting in their dorm/apartment/house. It’s what weekends are for, and they always have been, since the time our parents and grandparents were in their teens and twenties. If anyone decides to go out, it’s safe to assume that they’ll be doing it during the weekend at some point.

But Thursday is not technically part of the weekend. So it’s sort of a standalone, a special and unique night to party. Even though Thursday precedes the weekend, it’s technically on its own. On a subconscious level, it feels like you’re part of an exclusive club when you go out on a Thursday. Subconsciously, it feels different and special.

You know how they say things are funnier when you’re not supposed to laugh? It’s the same principle with going out. Well-adjusted adults don’t go out until 2 AM and have drinks on weekday nights, at least not consistently. But this is college we’re talking about, and freedom is never wasted, only exploited. It’s just fun.

Thursdays are anticipated; long waited for during the week, which always seems infinitely longer than Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Participating in Thirsty Thursday is like finding crystalline water after a long drought. It’s like a surprise party for you and your friends. It feels like you’re back to your old self, with less stress, no late nights working, but more smiles and laughter.

To reword an old Irish blessing, “May the weekend rise up to meet you, may your Thursdays always be thirsty, may the spirit of fun shine warm upon your face.”
